The History of Inn on the Riverwalk

A pathway leads to a blue house near the River Walk, featuring signage and greenery.

The main house was constructed in 1916 and served as a doctor’s office. Over the years it has been a private residence, apartments in the 1970’s and 80’s and was fully renovated in 1990 by A.D. Zucht D.D.S., who also operated a hot air balloon business!

Dr. Zucht sold the inn to Joanna Gardener, who sold it to Roland Cavazos D.D.S. in 2014. Since then the inn has undergone many renovations for the increased comfort of our guests.

Inn on the Riverwalk Today…

Innkeeper/Owner/Roland Cavazos DDS

Born during the opening of the 1968 World’s Fair, Roland was raised in San Antonio by a second-generation barber and whose mother ran the family restaurant. During the 1940’s Roland’s father delivered newspapers to the single-family homes that once occupied Woodward Street. Little did he know that of those residences, three houses at the end of the block would come to be known as one of the most unique bed and breakfasts along the San Antonio River Walk.

Roland had his first B&B experience many years ago at Inn on the Riverwalk. The owner at that time was Dr. A.D. Zucht, who was also a dentist and hot air balloon pilot. It was on a balloon excursion that they exchanged stories only to discover their shared passion for dentistry and love for Downtown San Antonio. Coincidentally, just as A.D. retired his dental practice, Roland was just beginning his career in the field.

Almost two decades later, Roland came to believe in serendipity upon discovering the inn was for sale during his search for a new home. Roland was unwilling to pass up the opportunity to embark on a new journey, and the rest is history.

Sharing his time between the bed and breakfast and his dental practice, Roland came to include breakfast in “bedside manner”. At the inn, all guests will feel at home as Roland and the staff make it their goal to warmly welcome each and every guest. For those not from San Antonio, Roland knows the places to be and the sights to see. To start off the morning on the right note, our breakfast items are always served hot and made to order to accommodate your dietary preferences.
